Food Grade Stainless Steel Check Valves are used throughout the Malaysian food and beverage industry. This post will provide a basic discussion of the valve.
Sanitary Check Valve Function
Sanitary check valves are used in many applications. It normally comes in weld end or ferrule ends, and available in SS 316L, from 1" to 4".
Check valves allow fluid to flow in only one direction. With pressure, product flows in through one port where a spring loaded disc allows it through, and exit from the other port. Once the disc closes, the product will not be able to return. Sanitary check valves can be installed in vertical and horizontal applications.
Hygienic Check Valve Advantages
Unlike Sanitary Ball Valves and Butterfly Valves, Check Valves work automatically and do not require a person to operate, and can be cleaned by CIP systems. However, Sanitary check valves requires a small amount of upstream pressure to operate, which is called cracking pressure.
While its automatic and simple operating principle makes it convenient to use, viscous medium can sometimes cause the valve to not operate properly.
Also, because the disc is always in the way of product flow, there will be a slight pressure drop.
Sanitary Ball Valve (Hygienic Ball Valve) Compared
Sanitary Check Valves are often compared with Sanitary Ball Valves, the most common sanitary valve.
Other than the automatic operation advantage, Hygienic Check Valves also prevent backflow which can be crucial to prevent contamination.
Sanitary Check Valves are also much more cost effective and easy to maintain due to its simpler design.
